Next-Gen Oyster Shell Competition

Pearlita Foods is calling all designers & materials scientists to help create a modern take on a compostable oyster shell. The winning design will serve as the foundation for the final packaged product. Use your imagination and creativity to show us your vision for a modern take on a beautiful oyster shell. To ensure compatibility, the design must be food safe & compostable. Please find requirements below:

What does a next-gen oyster shell look like?

Must have requirements:

  • Shell size should be approximately

    • 3” length from hinge

    • 2” wide at maximum

    • 1” cup depth

  • Compostable

  • Food safe

  • Hydrophobic surface

  • Producible at large scale

  • Pretty

 

Nice to have requirements:

  • High temperature resistance

  • Made from waste products

Judging Criteria:

  • Originality

  • Usability

  • Biodegradability 

  • Reproducibility on large scale

 

Prize:

  • Winning design will be produced at scale for packaged goods

  • Winning designer will get recognized on packaging, mentions in press and acknowledgement

Submission requirements:

  • Illustration of shell design or photo of prototype

  • Shell composition and material breakdown with description

  • Protocol preferred (i.e. description of how the prototype is created)
